Joseph Cavallo is owner and founder of Cavallo Contracting. Joe, as he likes to be called grew up on the east coast but moved to the Chicago area in the mid-80’s. While growing up in areas like Bucks county PA, Lambertville, N.J., and Boston, Mass. Joe developed an affinity for building and architecture, and although he respected the need for development of plans.. he knew it was the hands on creativity and building that was his calling.
His first opportunity was in the coatings industry, Valspar. where he worked for almost 8 years. The knowledge gained inspired him to start an exterior painting company while working full time at Valspar 3rd shift. He did this for 2 years then left all of it to move to the suburbs of Chicago and work for other contractors to gain the know how to one day run his own company. For 4 years he absorbed as much knowledge from his mentors as he could, and then went out on his own to start what is now known as Cavallo Contracting. This was in 1998, and now 20 years later, joe and his company have become very well known in the Chicagoland area for their quality craftsmanship, reasonable pricing, and eye for detail.
He didn’t just stop at interior and exterior painting though, in 2005 he bought an old Victorian and spent all of his free time rehabbing it. To this day it’s still one of his crowning achievements. Joe’s credo has always been to enlist the help of others in the trades for what may be considered outside of his ability or knowledge. Through this he has had many mentors, developed many friendships and is regarded as the contact for “ I gotta guy “.
For almost 20 years now Cavallo Contracting has been doing interior and exterior painting, carpentry, wood and composite decking, kitchens , basements, and bathrooms. When asked why this direction? Joe will tell you it was always his mission to create a small to medium size general contracting firm. Many people don’t know how to hire someone to revitalize their home, make it their own, or get it ready for sale... and they certainly don’t want to deal with all the design work, trades, schedules, and logistics that come with these projects. He prides himself on the fact that we don’t just go after the big jobs, we gain a customer, then do whatever we can to keep that customer... sometimes it may be a small bathroom revamp and other times it could be a finished basement. He prides himself on the ability to be given a project of any size, the same consideration. He believes this is a huge service as it takes the worry away from the today’s busy homeowner.
Last but most importantly, Joe loves to be creative and believes when someone comes to him for ideas, he will do whatever it takes to find that common ground that works for everyone involved whether it be design or budget. Joe and his company are one and the same and this brings a very personal angle to an otherwise not so personal business.
WE DO IT ALL
WHAT PEOPLE ARE SAYING
Initially we hired Joe Cavallo of Cavallo Painting and Decorating to paint our house, knowing that some repair/restoration was needed. Joe worked with us over several months, restoring and painting our house and garage. Considerable work was required to bring both back to life. Joe and his devoted work team guided us through the process with skill and dedication, yet with a careful eye to the bottom line. We were so impressed by the quality of their work that we decided to use them to undertake some more extensive remodeling while they were available.
We have been exceptionally pleased with the final results. Neighbors and friends have commented on the quality of the workmanship and the careful, meticulous work they observed daily. For us, it was a pleasure to work with Joe. In fact, when the team ‘moved out’ at the end of the project, we realized how much we enjoyed having them here each day.
Characteristics that stand out for us include the following:
Project oversight. Joe managed all aspects of the project, from selection of shingles to rebuilding storm windows and screens. We were confident in his abilities throughout.
Admirable work ethic of the entire crew. It became obvious that Joe takes care in selecting his workmen and that he takes care of them, concerned about their health and well being when temperatures soared.
Passion – The passion Joe possesses for his work and the results became obvious very quickly. He has high standards for himself and his crew. It’s not just a job for him. He takes great pride in producing the highest quality of work.
Promptness – Joe called, emailed or arrived for appointments when he said he would. He was always easy to reach via phone or email. After experiencing other unreliable workmen in the past, we have greatly appreciated Joe’s professionalism.
Honesty and forthrightness – when he didn’t have an answer for us, he investigated an issue and returned with explanations and options.
Joe is experienced with paint textures, qualities and colors. He worked for years for a paint manufacturer and he knows paint inside out … he said the process of color selection would evolve and indeed it did. We made the final decisions but he guided and counseled us as the process evolved.
Willingness to work with and learn from other professionals. During the course of our project, Joe met several other Elgin contractors – woodworkers who contributed to our project by building storm windows or offering advice on various aspects (pillars, posts, etc.).
Cost accounting- Joe kept meticulous records of all expenses for both materials and labor. He worked hard to keep the project within our budget, but without sacrificing the quality of the final product.
In summery, we are very pleased to give Cavallo Painting and Decorating the highest recommendation. We are confident that others will be as pleased with his work as we are.
