About the Village


The Village was incorporated on July 5, 1892 and as of June 9, 1994, operates as a home-rule unit of government.  The Village is primarily residential and commercial in nature, with housing stock consisting of about 6,800 detached single-family homes and about 4,300 multi-family dwelling units. 


The Village operates under a trustee form of government as defined by Illinois Compiled Statues.  The Village President, Village Clerk and six trustees are elected at large to serve four-year terms, with three trustees elected every second year.  The Village Manager is the chief administrative officer of the Village and is responsible for day-to-day operations.  The Village Manager oversees a team of six department directors including Finance, Police, Village Links golf course and Reserve 22 restaurant, Public Works, Legal and Planning and Development.

The Village offers "Glen Ellyn Alerting," an emergency rapid notification system which enables Village officials to quickly notify the public with important information during an emergency, examples of which include:


*Severe Weather Alerts (tornadoes, blizzards, floods, heat advisories, etc.)
*Major utility outages affecting all or a significant portion of the community/region
*Evacuations and shelter locations
*Warming/Cooling Shelters
*Public Safety/Crime Alerts
*Post-Emergency Community Bulletins
*Public Health Hazards/Incidents (e.g. boil orders, Hazmat spills, etc)
*Major Road Closures/Traffic Alerts

Refuse and Recycling Collection

The Village contracts with Groot Industries to provide refuse and recycling collection to all single family homes within Glen Ellyn. Residents are provided one refuse cart and one recycling cart to use as their primary containers. The carts come in 35, 65 and 95 gallon sizes. For more information, please visit the Village's Refuse and Recycling webpage or contact the Billing and Customer Service Division of the Village at 630-547-5235. To sign up for these services, residents must complete the Village Services Application.

Vehicle Stickers


Glen Ellyn residents must purchase a vehicle sticker for each car registered to a Glen Ellyn address. Stickers cost $25 per car (cost may vary depending on vehicle type) and expire each year on April 30. Residents also have the option to purchase a three-year vehicle sticker at a discounted price of $70. Purchase your vehicle stickers by mail using the Village Services Application or at the Billing and Customer Service Division, 535 Duane Street, Glen Ellyn. Effective May 1 of each year, a late fee of $5 per month, per vehicle, will be assessed for vehicles that do not display the new sticker. In addition, the Police Department will issue $50 tickets for noncompliance.Voter Registration.

Residents can register to vote in local, state and federal elections at the Village of Glen Ellyn Civic Center (535 Duane Street). You may register at the Billing and Customer Service Division on the 1st Floor of the Civic Center or the 2nd floor Administration Office between the hours of 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. At other times, you may be able to register at the Police Department on the first floor of the Civic Center. Please call first to ensure a Registrar is on duty: 630-469-5000. To register, you will need two forms of I.D.; one I.D. should show your current address. You must register at least 30 days before election day.

With thriving business districts, both local and visiting shoppers can find an appealing mix of national retail outlets and specialty boutiques.  Glen Ellyn is particularly proud of its charming downtown and auto-oriented shopping along Roosevelt Road, which offer a variety of shopping opportunities.  The Village’s downtown shopping environment is full of local flavor and is pedestrian friendly, while its shopping along Roosevelt Road features many national franchises.
